ApacheRidge Ranch is situated on 42 acres in the beautiful, green state of Washington: well known for it's wonderful, rainy, climate and lots of apples. ApacheRidge is the home of healthy, hardy and happy hound dogs and we have a lifetime commitment to every single Rhodesian Ridgeback. We believe in quality before quantity and only breed to add valuable genes to the breed, with the result of puppies who are not only an asset to future Ridgeback generations, but are true representatives of the breed standards and the absolute ultimate family companion.
If for any reason you are unable to care for or keep your Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy or dog at any time or point in their lives, we require that you contact us and we will take them back. We will keep them, re-train them, re-home them, whatever it takes to keep them safe, healthy, happy, and know that they are loved.
Training your Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppy and attending puppy and obedience classes are a must. We believe that all Rhodesian Ridgebacks in addition to all dogs in general, need lots of successful obedience lessons and classes.
Our dogs are first and foremost our family pets and are loving members of our family. When we breed our dogs, we hand raise our puppies in our home with our children, grandchildren, family, and friends so that each little puppy will be a wonderful joy to their new owners. All our ridgebacks have great mental stability, easy going temperaments, perfect conformation, and are obedience dogs, tracking dogs or just couch potatoes. To achieve this combination is our main concern and typically that means long distances to the male and always years of planning.
All parents are Orthopedic Foundation (OFA) Good to Excellent for their hips and OFA elbows. Thyroids are normal. All are clear/normal for Degenerative Myelopathy and Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy. We raise very strong, healthy, family dogs. Our puppies carry our 24-month guarantee to be free from hip or elbow dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, dermoid sinus, any sight or hearing impairment, and guaranteed to have perfect teeth and bite. We raise very strong, healthy, family dogs.
Before leaving with their new forever families, each puppy is checked out thoroughly by us, by another breeder, will have been wormed, be up to date on their vaccine booster shots, as well as microchipped, and be released by our vet as good to go to their new forever home. All our puppies are purebred Rhodesian Ridgebacks, registerable with the American Kennel Club (AKC), and are a perfect representation of the breed, being structurally and temperamentally suited as wonderful pet companions and loyal obedience dogs.
Regular exercise. This does not mean simply putting your Ridgeback dog out in the back yard. It means your commitment to a regular schedule of walks, runs, training, playing with other dogs, and time spent playing with you. Not only will this interaction between you and your Ridgeback help to strengthen the union between you both, it will help to make your ridgeback that happy, healthy, and well-socialized dog of your dreams. Sometimes this means you must rearrange your schedule to accomodate your Ridgeback. Attending an obedience class with your new puppy dog is a wonderful way to kick off the bonding relationship with he or she and give your new ridgeback puppy that sense of stability they need in becoming a new pack member of your family.
Training and exercise start immediately with your ridgeback puppy. Ridgebacks who have solid obedience training, are cared for properly and lovingly, and have quality time spent with them are a joy to live with. They respond well to household routines, have good manners in the presence of people and other dogs, and they fully enjoy the company of the owner (new pack leader) who took the time to provide that training, intellectual stimulation, and a high quality life for them. Being consistent is very important. Ridgebacks, just like people, can become bored and even overweight when they do not get out in the fresh air and get exercise.
All of ApacheRidge Ranch puppies come with a puppy packet in which you receive Certified AKC Limited Registration Application papers, in addition to an ApacheRidge Ranch contractual aggreement requiring you to spay/neuter your pet puppy when your vet recommends, or between 24 and 26 months of age, a copy of the parents multi-generation Certified AKC pedigree, along with vaccine booster shot, worming records, microchip and the National Pet Recovery Database paperwork, online links to some really great training websites, comprehensive ridgeback puppy training strategies, a small bag of the healthy dog food your sweet baby is currently eating, as well as information about ridgeback puppies and the Ridgeback breed in general from RRCUS, your puppy's baby blanket that has the scent of their parents and siblings, their favorite toy, and a lifetime support commitment to the ridgeback puppy that will be in your care.
Every ridgeback puppy comes with a contract as a way to successfully establish expectations and responsibilities concerning the safety of your new ridgeback dog, requiring that you establish a booster vaccination program with your veterinarian and neuter/spay your companion puppy at the appropriate age. (We personally like to neuter/spay between 24 and 26 months old) We require a vet appointment for the next series of vaccine booster shots that will be needed. Our vet gives: 4 shots of (Distemper-Hepatitis / Parainfluenza / Parvo) combination about 3-4 weeks apart, then a yearly booster. Also all dogs receive a rabies shot between 4 - 12 months old (first one good for 1 year then every 3 years in Washington State). Each state and county has it's own laws and ordinances regarding the time of canine rabies shots and licensing. Your vet will tell you if you are living in an area with heartworms and if you need monthly heartworm medication, Leptospirosis, corona, lyme's shots, or rattlesnake vaccine. Alternatively, there are holistic/integrative veterinarians who will provide your puppy’s first vaccination at about 14 weeks of age because your puppy should have the Mother’s immunity until then. And to confirm this status, a titer test can be conducted. Afterward, a yearly blood titer test will be administered to determine what the immunity status is and what vaccine/vaccines if any are needed.
We perform ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation) on all puppies from the 3rd to the 16th day of life. It has been proven that the puppies will have improved heart rate, stronger heartbeats, stronger adrenal glands, increased stress tolerance, improved immune system and improved social skills. Here is a link to read more about Early Neurological Stimulation.
We love our dogs and do everything in our power to keep them happy, be the healthiest possible, live their ultimate, longest lifespan, and keep their immune systems totally strengthened. To do this, we share lots of love, obedience train, feed good food, and give them a daily treat of superior, all natural, tried and proven vitamins! Because it can be somewhat difficult to know the food you are feeding your loved one is a complete, balanced, and healthy diet for each individual puppy and dog going through puppy-hood and adulthood, we recommend supplementing your beloved canine friend with the same superior, all natural, human-grade vitamins that we use. They are formulated by a team of top veterinarians, physicians, pharmacists, and nutritional scientists and are manufactured in an FDA human-grade facility. We feed these vitamins for the love, health and longevity of our precious friends. It is their favorite, daily treat! Here is a link to check them out.
Dog Food Toppers are simply something that can be added to any dog's regular meals to enhance the eating experience, flavor, texture, nutritional value, or the training experience. Toppers can provide variety to a dog's diet, help with training activities, address specific dietary needs, and potentially encourage picky eaters to consume their food, although most ridgebacks are not very picky eaters. They come in various forms, including wet, raw, dry, freeze-dried, dehydrated, powders, and even homemade options.
ApacheRidge Ranch's Ridgeback dogs and puppies typically receive plain cooked or raw meat as toppers daily on top of their meals and for training activities. After a long hard walk a reward might be a cool dip in the pool or lake, or a fresh piece of raw or cooked chicken meat… We use meat, because we always know what the ingredients are…Meat!
One of our missions at ApacheRidge Ranch is to provide for the rescue, care and re-homing of abandoned or unwanted Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs, as well as to love, protect and preserve the integrity and welfare of the Rhodesian Ridgeback breed. A home where everyone gives the dog an opportunity to live up to its potential as a great friend and canine companion. Some of these Rescued Ridgebacks come from wonderful, loving homes that had to give them up due to major, life-changing events like divorce, separation, moving into a nursing home, going overseas, death, major illnesses, etc... Some, however, have lived difficult lives where their owners were unprepared for the lifestyle requirements of the breed or they did not spend the time to properly train their Ridgeback. These rescue Ridgebacks have typically lost someone they loved very much. In any case, they often go through an adjustment period when they join their new family, which can be difficult for them. Sometimes we are able to acquire a complete background of their health and temperament, sometimes that is not available.
Our goals are to nurture them, walk with them, love them, make sure they are taken to a veterinarian for a thorough health check-up, immunizations, help them adjust, and find these sweet canines responsible owners who are committed to the dog's needs, exercise, socialization, understanding, obedience training, patience, love and plenty of "quality" time spent with their dog.
We do not always have the precious opportunity to have one of these special dogs in our home, but when do, we like to place them within driving distance of our home here in Washington, so they are placed into homes in either Oregon or Washington. We can also direct you to other places to look here in the northwest. A good place to start is Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue. If you live somewhere other than Oregon or Washington, we can direct you to rhodesian ridgeback rescues who are closer to you and can possibly match you up with one of these special rhodesian ridgebacks in your area. A good place to start looking is Ridgeback Rescue of The United States.
Sometimes this means you will have to re-arrange your work or other schedules to attend to your dog's needs, or arrange for someone else like a doggy daycare to do this for you. When you work 9, 10, or more hours each day away from home and away from your dog, then it might not be the best time right now for you to have a dog, regardless of how much you love dogs and want one. You must think of what is good for and fair to the dog.
Feel free to email: diana@loveyourridgeback.com for more information as to the rescue organization that has rescue ridgebacks available in your area as they are regional.
Hiking and walking with our Ridgebacks is an irreplaceable joy in our lives. The southwest Washington area is full of waterfalls to see and hike around. Above is a picture of a couple of our Ridgebacks when we were taking a ride on the Chelatchie Prairie Railroad excursion train. This is a cool one because you can get off of the train for 30 minutes and hike around Yacolt Falls area. We lived in Yacolt Washington 17+ years so it was quite easy for us to be at any of several waterfalls in less than 25 minutes and 5 of them in less than 10 minutes. Needless to say we and our Ridgebacks have loved it and still do when we can get there. Should you want to hike the falls areas with your Ridgeback, here is a link to see maps of some of the area waterfalls.
